5 Steps to Picking Your First Linux Distro

After many years of using Windows, almost all of us come across a Linux distro and our lives are changed forever.

There’s a caveat, however: it’s difficult to pick a Linux distro considering that there so many of them available these days.

So, here are 5 steps by which you can pick just the right Linux distro for your system:

#1: For a start, either pick either OpenSUSE, Ubuntu, Mandriva or LinuxMint. While most Linux distros will have a desktop environment that makes it easy to use, also consider one that offers the type of applications you need for your daily use.

#2: Since most of these distros are available for download, one way to decide which one you like the most is by booting each one of them from a USB stick. Yes, you don’t have to install on your computer to use it!

#3: Another way by which you can decide which distro to use is by looking at the distro’s website and help forums as you will definitely need technical support (if you can call it that!) if and when issues arise.

#4: Now download the .iso file from their website and burn it on to a CD or install it from the USB stick. You have to remember that each of these files are sized at about 700 to 800 MB, and will take a while to download if you have a slow connection.

#5: Follow instructions to install it on your PC on the website or in the help forums and if everything goes well after you reboot, you have now installed your first Linux distro and are good to go!
