The disadvantages of using a Chromebooks

technetnews2Chromebooks are extremely popular in the education sector, outpacing both Microsoft and Apple. This success has not (yet) translated into sales to normal end users. There are a lot of unknowns for users at this point when it comes to the Chromebook and there has been limited exposure in terms of marketing. The primary attractiveness comes from the lower price point that most chromebook have on average. There are some drawbacks to using a Chromebook, here are three of them.

Limited storage

Chromebooks have limited storage. Most generally have up to 16 or 32 GB of local storage. There is also an option to extended storage, that will require the use of an SD card. This means that you will have to get comfortable using cloud storage for most of your files or external USB sticks and drives.

Cloud storage

This is one of the primary benefits of using a Chromebook. It is that all files stored on the cloud. To encourage this Google gives 100 GB of free storage on Google Drive for 2 years upon purchase. After that you would have to pay a small fee to continue that same package. unfortunately not everyone is comfortable with storing their files on the cloud. There are concerns of security and privacy.

Speed

One of the issues with the low price point of Chromebooks is that they tend to have lower spec hardware. They are well known for their quick boot up time but actual performance can be slower than a typical laptop. The other issue is that due to storing almost all files on the cloud, the speed of the Chromebook can be directly related to your Internet connectivity.
